MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State wrestling will take to the mats at Taylor Center for the first time this season as the Mavericks take on the Johnnies Thursday night.
Minnesota State and St. John’s will wrestle in the Mavericks first dual of the season Thursday night at 7:00 p.m., in just the eighth meeting between the two in-state programs. Minnesota State holds a 7-0 record against the Johnnies after winning 38-3 in their dual last January in Collegeville, Minn.
The Mavericks won nine out of 10 matches in the previous meeting. Current Minnesota State wrestlers to pick up positive results in the dual were Louie Sanders (So., 141 lbs.) Daniel Close (Jr., 149 lbs.), Logan Saltou (So., 157 lbs.), Dylan Herman (Sr., 165 lbs.), Matthew Blome (So., 184 lbs.), and Chris Zimmer (Sr., 285 lbs.).
The Mavericks were recently ranked 19th in the most recent edition of the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll. Abernathy and Blome were the two individual Minnesota State wrestlers to be ranked nationally in the poll. Abernathy heads into the dual as the fourth-rated wrestler at the 184-pound weight class, while Blome is rated fifth at 197 pounds. Both wrestlers are returning All-Americans from last season.
The Johnnies began their season wrestling at the Augsburg Open in Minneapolis, Minn. on November 17th. There St. John’s placed five wrestlers in top-six positions. The Johnnies have two wrestlers ranked nationally in the preseason edition of the DIII NWCA poll. Junior Luke Dodd is the eighth-rated wrestler at 184 pounds and Noah Becker is rated ninth at 133 pounds. St. Johns is coached by Kevin Schiltz in just his first season in charge. Schlitz served as the Johnnies assistant wrestling coach for the past 16 years.
